AVATAR :: lets talk about this film!

Mon Dec 21, 2009, 2:15 PM
Avatar

Hey guys!

I am surprised to see very little discussion about this movie, so I thought I would post up my thoughts, and hopefully hear what you guys think.

I went and saw Avatar the other night. I actually chose to see it in 2D because I am wanting to avoid this whole 3D 'gimmick' which is happening at the moment. I have also heard that when you watch a film in 3D it looses some of the brightnes and colour. More on that later.

I was blown away guys! I REALLY LOVED this movie. I fell in love with the world, and with it's inhabitants. Some critics (like Roger Ebert) are comparing this movie to starwars when it first came out in 1977, and it was one of the first things I said to my girlfriend as I walked out of the cinema.

This is a big call really, and only time will tell, but the way I see it all the right ingredients are in place.

I read somewhere that the actors are signed up for a trilogy, so that is really exciting. It means that we may get to explore more of Pandora, and who knows...perhaps see more alien races from other planets??

The design work is just gorgeous to look at, from the environments to the creatures to the cold inorganic military vehicles. There is something about the quality here which makes me feel like paintings and artwork have really come to life.

The story was a little predictable in parts, but I think to some extent this was the best and smartest way to introduce audiences to this world. It really worked for me in any case.

One of the other things that really stands out as you watch this flick is the depth of what you are seeing on screen. The environments are HUGE and everything just feels so sparce. As I was sitting there, I was realising how much the 3D would enhance this effect, and so I am going to go see it again this week with the 3D glasses to get that experience.

Love to hear what you guys thought of this movie! Am I the only one who thought it was amazing?!

J.

It's November :: So what's new...

Thu Nov 5, 2009, 7:16 PM
My journal really needs an update, so I thought this might be as good a time as any to give you guys an update on what I'm up to with my art and also outside of that.

November is a good month. Everyone loves the month they were born in, right? Well, for me, November is great. Summer is just starting to roll in. Nice warm weather, BBQ's and good times catching up with friends and family. (Thats if you live on this side of the world I guess!)

I've been working at a fairly steady pace for the last month. I am just wrapping up on the first issue of the comic book I am drawing for Wildstorm. Some of you guys may have seen the FREEREALMS comic. Well, I am drawing the 2nd arc of that series. It won't be out for a while, but once it hits you should get a few solid months of art from me in comic book form.

The best thing about this is that I am drawing regularly again. For a while there I was only able to draw in my spare time when I was free from my 'day job'. I wasnt having fun with that. It is a little bit like torture when all you want to do is draw and create comics, but you just dont seem to get the time.

Anyway.....so far so good. I'm having a great time drawing this book, and it feels really good to be productive again.

I am also working on some IRONMAN 2 sketchcards for Upperdeck as well as the last issue of Gemini, plus I have been doing sketches for people who have been buying my most recent art book Ozmosis Chills II. I have less than 50 of those left now for anyone interested. I'll start posting up some of those sketches soon too.

So thats that for now...I'm trying to build up a habit of posting something new every FRIDAY as well, so you know when to check in.

Anyone up for a colour jam again sometime soon? I'm thinking non-chibi this time around....we'll see. Depends if there are actually any takers.

Thanks for reading!

You know who luvs ya!

Back from the U.S.A

Wed Aug 5, 2009, 3:21 PM
Hey guys!

The title says it all!

I had an amazing time over in the states. We spent our time visiting San Diego, Orange County and LA over the past 2 weeks, and we have met some great people and made some really good friends too.

I'm just going through all the messages you guys have left. I will try and reply to as many as I can. I want to say a big massive thankyou to everyone who stopped by my table at comicon and said hello. I really enjoyed meeting everyone there. I'll post up some photos from the con with some commentary soon enough.

I'll also have some details for anyone who is interested in picking up some art stuff from me. I have sketchbooks/prints/comics/original art available now, and I will make it easy for you guys to grab from me. Keep your eyes peeled!

I really had a blast over there guys, and I will be making a comeback sometime next year!! (most likely NY).

Catch up with you all soon!

Hey!!
OK...so every man and his dog is talking about it, but I wanted to let you guys know where you can find me and all that.

I'll be at the Image comics booth #2729.

I'm sharing a table with Mr. Jason Howard of Astounding Wolf-man fame.
:iconjasonhoward:

Also sitting very close by will be Mr. Invincible himself, Ryan Ottley.
:iconwya:

Here is a little photo of some of the stuff you can grab from me at the con. There is also a little cheeky photo of me there with Toddy McFarlane.

I will be at the CBLDF/ Image comics welcome party on the night of the 22nd. I also have some original art which I have donated to the CBLDF for auction. It is a sweet ass Punisher/Wolvie piece which I have published in OC2.

I'm planning on having a lot of fun there, and I hope to meet as many of you guys as can make it by.

See you guys when I get back!

Who luvs ya?

The latest issue of Gemini comes out on JULY 22nd. Go cop it, or get one from me in San Diego where I will deface the cover for you if you so wish.

OZMOSIS CHILLS II: Pre-orders are now closed. Thanks to everyone who made a purchase. They will be sent out during the week if all goes to plan, so you won't have to wait long. I will make left-overs available here online once I get back to AUS.
